1911 - 1912 Eleventh president of the AAU. He was affectionately known as “Father Bill” and was termed during the bicycle craze. During this period, the AAU took its first decisive steps towards endeavoring to realize the purposes of the organization which was that of a union and not merely an organization to administer activities in various fields of amateur athletes but rather by forging alliances with various groups governing those sports not directly controlled by the AAU to weld them together into a union or federation of constructive administration.
